Chamber offers US tax advice session
Americans living in Bermuda will not have to file their taxes until June, two months after their compatriates at home have filed theirs.
Executive vice-president of LOM Asset Management Ltd. Jon Heckscher said this is just one of the nuggets Americans would learn from a Chamber of Commerce session being held for Americans living abroad on April 21.
While most Americans will have filed their taxes on April 15, those living abroad will not have to do so until June 15. They are also entitled to a tax exemption on money they have spent on housing here in Bermuda. The session will cover a variety of topics including how to report Bermuda pension plan income, what credits can be taken to offset US-source income and the tax ramifications of certain foreign investments. "When I first arrived on the Island I didn't have a clue as an American about what I could and could not claim," Mr. Heckscher said. "The session is not just for CEOs, it is for regular working people who may not know what they are doing or who could be receiving more tax returns. Every year it seems the regulations change and this session will help people better navigate the system."
Also on hand will be trust specialists who will discuss the benefits of establishing a trust in Bermuda for US citizens and how to set one up.
Mr. Heckscher will be joined by US tax specialist and Royal Gazette columnist James Sabo, who is the president of Expatriate Tax Services in New Jersey, US trust specialist Dina Kapur Sanna, who is a partner at Day Pitney in New York, and international trust specialist Lindsay McCann, who is executive vice-president of Bermuda's St. George's Trust Company Ltd.
Members of the chamber are encouraged to attend the event from 4 p.m. until 5.30 p.m. on April 21. Seating is limited, so the Chamber asks that you register in advance. It is free for members, non-members will be charged $20. To register, e-mail ldavis@bcc.bm.
