Gades, Teachers take charge
scheduled first XV games involving the Island's four rugby clubs.
But there was still plenty of action at National Sports Club on Saturday with Renegades beating Police 15-0 and Teachers defeating Mariners 29-8.
In the first game of a wet and windy afternoon, Renegades' fly half Tim Boynton opened the scoring with a well taken penalty after his opposite number, Police captain Ian Jamieson, missed one.
The match swayed to and fro in the sloppy conditions with both teams experiencing difficulty in handling the ball but neither managed to further the score before half time.
After the half, Renegades came out strongly and a move from the back of the scrum saw their flanker feed wing Rob Yaremko who kicked the ball into the goal area and beat the Police full back to pounce and score the try.
Boynton missed the conversion but redeemed himself later when he converted prop Patrick O'Brien's try from a quick penalty taken 10 yards from the Police try line.
The score stayed at 15-0 until the end despite continued Police pressure on a solid Renegades' defence.
In the late game, a lack of experienced front row forwards meant Teachers and Mariners were forced to play with uncontested scrums.
The Reds were also forced to start the game with only 14 players but were brought up to strength after five minutes with the arrival of prop John Edwards.
Mariners' flanker Bill Zuill opened the scoring with a try after an errant clearance kick from Reds' full back David Cooke went straight to where he was standing near the goal line.
Mariners' captain Derek Kilcoyne failed to convert but Reds' number eight Patrick McHugh was luckier with the boot and got his team on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty soon afterwards.
Teachers' scrum half Mark Sherwood was next to score from the back of a scrum near Mariners' goal line as Reds began to apply pressure. McHugh converted to take the score to 10-5 but Mariners replied almost immediately with a huge kick from Kilcoyne that found touch one yard from the Reds try line.
However, Mariners were unable to score, thanks to some stout Reds' defence, until Kilcoyne kicked a penalty shortly before the half time whistle.
Then it was all Teachers as Sherwood waltzed in to score untouched from the back of a ruck immediately after the restart. McHugh continued to have a good day with the boot and converted.
Reds were then rewarded again when substitute Noel Capewell broke from midfield and fed wing Kevin Walsh who dived into the corner to score.
Capewell benefited from the next break after Teachers' fly half Kevin Harris danced his way up field and fed Capewell who scored under the posts making McHugh's final conversion of the day his easiest.
With the score 29-8, Mariners went on a late surge at the Reds' try line but were unrewarded before the final whistle.
