McKinnon bags three tries
Canadian international Gord McKinnon was the only bright light in Teachers' 29-5 triumph over Mariners at Nationals on Saturday.
His three tries halted what could have been an embarrassing afternoon for the league leaders.
Mariners surprised the crowd with their very spirited performance that even had diehard Teachers supporters admiring them. Apart from a starring role from McKinnon there was little of the Teachers early season promise.
It was only midway through the second half that Teachers knew they had won this one when McKinnon outstripped the opposition to score against the run of play when Teachers had a 15-5 lead. Dennis Cherry stepped up to take the place kick when it was obvious that Nathan Browne had left his boots somewhere else.
Heath Robinson scored the other try in typical fashion.
Mariners were never intimidated and a fine try from Stuart Thomson was a just reward for a hard fought effort.
However, it's very obvious that Teachers are beatable without McKinnon's presence.
Police 52 Renegades 0 The opener saw Police demolish a very inexperienced Renegades side.
From the outset it was evident that Police were in for a comfortable afternoon with Gareth Davies spearheading the charge.
Davies, who scored two tries, stretched the defence all game. Prop Jon Williams, steadily coming into his own, dragged the opposition around on his back and charged over for a try.
David Bird converted all seven tries and added a penalty. Two tries apiece from Jon Cassidy and Tom Steinhoff completed the rout.
