St George’s golf course is ripe for development now that the Club Med development for the East End is off the table, according to former St George’s West MP Kim Swan.Impatient with the course’s “neglect”, Mr Swan told The Royal Gazette: “To see the course so overgrown, in a community that’s had it for so long, makes no sense at all — if this is a time when Government’s looking for new revenue streams in tourism, then let’s use of it.”As MPs discussed the repeal of the Park Hyatt Act, Mr Swan said it was time for Government to return to the commitment for a restored golf course promised back in 2012’s Throne Speech.“This is the time to revisit that — even more than just opening up the golf course, it could be a golf development facility for the express purpose of training people to play,” the former professional golfer urged.“That training component could happen for sailing and tennis as well as golf. You don’t have to invest a whole pile — just spend the money in a way that creates employment at the same time. I know this because I have been in the industry — I managed the course in 1985.”He added: “When you’re in the industry there are some things you know will work. It’s time to think outside the box and make use of the land now.”Properties like the St George’s Club and small guest houses in the Old Town could make easy use of the amenity, along with nearby hotels like Grotto Bay Beach and Clear View in Hamilton Parish, Mr Swan added.“Golf training academies and developmental schools would help bring visitors to the Island during the off season,” he said.“It’s starting to get cool here now but it’s already getting cold in overseas.”
