Recalls issued for vacuum cleaners and Ab Loungers
The Department of Consumer Affairs last week issued recalls for two products which residents may have purchased either locally or abroad.
Recalls were issued for both the Procter & Gamble ?Sweep and Vac? vacuum cleaner and the Ab Lounge series of exercisers.
?Consumers should stop using the recalled product immediately,? Consumer Affairs warned, ?as the vacuum? rotor, when left in the on position, can lock and cause the unit to overheat, creating a fire hazard?.
Proctor & Gamble said it has received 14 complaints, including one fire, in which the rotor locked up on the Sweep and Vac by Swiffer, causing it to overheat and smoke. There were no injuries reported, the company said.
?Consumers should disconnect the vacuum by pressing the small green button on the pole, about 12 inches below the handle, then pull the handle straight out. This eliminates any possibility of the unit overheating,? Consumer Affairs said.
The recalled Sweep and Vac is a battery-operated, upright vacuum cleaner used to vacuum floors.
The vacuum stands about four-feet-tall and has a green base and silver pole, Consumer Affairs said.
Consumers who purchased their vacuum overseas should contact Procter & Gamble at (800)487-5915 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or visit the company?s web-site, www.swiffersweepandvac.com, for refunds.
?Those consumers who have bought the affected units locally should return them to the store of purchase with the receipt,? the department said.
However, only vacuums with the serial numbers 37000 to 46522 and 37000 to 02553 are considered to be fire hazards. The numbers are printed on the product?s packaging.
Recalls were also issued for ?Fitness Quest Incorporated products ? Ab Lounge, Ab Lounge 2 and Ab Lounge Ultimate Exercisers?.
The manufacturer has received 15 reports of injuries, including cases in which people cut, crushed or amputated their fingers.
The injuries do not occur while users are exercising, but when they are folding or unfolding the machines, the company said. The recall does not include Ab Lounge exercisers with straight brackets that do not fold.
Consumer Affairs warned: ?When opening or folding up the exercise machines, user?s fingers can become caught in the hinges.?
The recall involves the following serial numbers:
AB LOUNGE TM: ALX-000001 through ALX-037999 and all machines that start with serial numbers 03 44 through 04 36
AB LOUNGE TM 2: AL2X-000001 through AL2X-059060 and all machines that start with serial numbers 04 03 through 04 36
AB LOUNGE TM ULTIMATE: 04 28 through 04 34.Consumers who have purchased their machines from overseas can call (800)638-2772 to receive their repair kits. Those consumers who have purchased the item locally should contact the retailer with proof of purchase for a repair kit,? Consumer Affairs said.
