Fairmont employees collect 100+ bags of trash off South Shore
More than 100 bags of garbage were collected off the South Shore on Saturday by Fairmont employees, along with their friends and families.
The clean-up was one of the hotel's projects aimed to promote a cleaner environment, a campaign that has already earned the hotel the Evergreen Environmental Hotel-of-the-Year credit and earned Fairmont Southampton's golf course Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Status.
Along with the walking volunteers, who picked up trash between Fairmont Beach and Chaplain Bay, 13 volunteers from DIVE Bermuda recovered several loads of plastic, glass, rope and other marine hazards from the waters of the area.
Volunteers started picking up garbage on the beaches and the paths along South Shore at 9 a.m., collecting the 100 bags of garbage in only two hours, before separating the garbage so that the tin, glass and aluminium that was found could be recycled.
Environmental chairman at the Fairmont Southampton Jason Pick thanked DIVE Bermuda and Dolphin Quest, along with the many volunteers who gave their time to and effort to the clean-up in a press release.
"Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is highly committed to green initiatives and we are always proud to do our part to keep Bermuda clean and beautiful," said Mr. Pick.
Other efforts organised by the Fairmont Southampton include using a UV system to treat potable water to avoid using chlorine and planting 150 Bermuda cedars as part of its Leave It Green reforestation programme. "We take pride in making a difference and a positive impact in our communities," said Mr. Pick.
The clean-up project is held by the hotel every year and is timed to coincide with World Ocean Day and International Green Week. To reward the volunteers, Fairmont Southampton provided all those who were involved a complementary lunch.
