Art contest draws great response
as tree frogs, crabs, toads, snails, lizards and birds during and after a hurricane? What if you were a brain coral attached to a reef? How would you feel with pounding waves beating against you? Or you might be a tree, defenceless against strong winds and waves.
The Royal Gazette posed these questions to schoolchildren aged 5-10 and hundreds responded.
We received 232 paintings from children all over the Island. The paintings were judged by Marlee Robinson, The Curator of the National Gallery of Art and Peggy Kett, President of Bermuda Children's Society at 9.30 a.m. on May 20.
Ms Robinson commented: "The Hurricane Art Contest was an excellent reminder to children and adults about looking after plants and animals during storms.
The variety was quite good.'' Both judges were amazed at the creative efforts of the paintings. Ms Kett said: "The entries for ages 7 and 8 were outstanding! They were particularly colourful and thoughtful.'' Some schools showed a particular interest in the art contest and encouraged student participation such as St. George's Prep, Mount St. Agnes, Montessori, and Somerset Primary.
