Cougars cruise in cup opener
Devonshire Cougars, spurred by a vocal home crowd, roared past Wolves and into the first round of the FA Cup on the tails of a virtuoso performance at the Den yesterday.
Seemingly stung by Wolves' claim to much of the early season spotlight, Cougars proceeded to feast upon the visiting prey -- no-one moreso than striker Philip Clarke, whose size and speed had a telling effect in weakening the Wolves defence.
Clarke bulldozed his way for two second half goals, although the damage had already been done as Devon Brangman and Keith Smith each found the target during the first half.
The opening exchanges had seen Wolves taking the game to their hosts as the front-line of Jomar Wilkinson, Andy Laws and Vincent Minors created several chances. In the 10th minute the rotund Wilkinson blasted over the bar from 16 yards after working himself into position to shoot despite heavy traffic in the penalty area.
But Cougars weathered the all too brief storm and set about creating turmoil of their own.
Simmons watched his goal-bound effort from close-in deflect off the body of a defender in the 17th minute and five minutes later the diminutive forward buried his shot from an acute angle on the right into goalkeeper Andre Smith.
It took an element of luck for Cougars to finally take the lead in the 33rd minute with Brangman the beneficiary of a questionable decision by an unofficial linesman.
Brangman, standing in what appeared to be an offside position as he received a through ball from Stephen Coddington, took full advantage, outstripping left-back Troy Dean before powering a right-foot blast into the left corner.
Four minutes later the advantage was doubled and there would be no controversy, with Simmons receiving reward for his hard running up front, latching onto a long ball forward from Cory Smith, controlling at the edge of the penalty area and unleashing a searing, knee high drive that burst into the right corner.
Cougars coasted for much of the second half, seemingly content to rest on the lead. However, just as Wolves began to stake more of a claim the home side struck again.
In the 84th minute Clarke embarked on a run up the middle, casting aside tacklers including 'keeper Smith, before ramming the ball into an empty net.
Four minutes later it was Clarke who netted again, this time getting on the end of a goal-kick that dropped over the defensive line before toe-poking the ball under the body of an advancing Smith.
