Ditch your bra - in the name of charity

Amba Smith is encouraging women to donate their worn or unused bras to Athena’s Cup. The US-based event is raising money for breast cancer awareness and hopes to gather and link 169,000 bras to beat the world record.

Amba Smith is on a mission to collect as many bras as possible in the name of charity.Underwire, push-up, strapless and racerback she hopes residents will donate all types, and in large amount, to raise breast cancer awareness. Her efforts are in aid of Athena’s Cup, a fundraiser started by Athena’s Home Novelties. The Rhode Island company is hoping to make the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bras linked together at one time the current record is 166,625.The company is also hoping to raise more than $500,000 for cancer research through $5 donations.Ms Smith’s sister Roni Carbone works for Athena’s Home Novelties. She asked Ms Smith to assist with the cause. She has already collected 50 bras and is enlisting support from friends, family and good Samaritans on the Island to help gather more.Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has stepped forward and offered to donate between 80 and 100 brassieres to the cause.Ms Smith told The Royal Gazette the fundraising effort was “very close to her heart” after watching her grandmother battle with breast cancer and losing her father to stomach cancer. One message she wanted to get across was that cancer can strike any family. As such she is also asking for donations of $5, which will be used to help find a cure for breast cancer.Ms Smith said it didn’t matter whether the bras were new or used, all that was important was that the clasp be intact so it could link to another bra at October’s event. The bras can be given as they were purchased, or decorated in memory of a loved one.“Everyone has a bra that they don’t wear anymore or that has something wrong with it.”Bras and cash can be donated between now and October by contacting Ms Smith, amba_smith[AT]hotmail.com.Useful website: http://www.athenascup.org
