Speeders should be banned

March 8, 2013Dear Sir,Do people not obey traffic laws anymore?I am alarmed to learn that Bermuda has more vehicle accidents per square mile than anywhere else in the world; additionally numerous unsuspecting visitors end up in the hospital each year because of moped accidents. Reckless driving is becoming an epidemic and it’s causing more and more accidents annually. It terrifies me to ride at night and even during the day because of reckless driving. This trend is alarming and increasing annually — reading that there have been five road fatalities in the past two months is terrifying. When is it going to get to a point where the government is going to step in and do something about it? There has to be a stronger police presence on the roads, especially the main roads in town. Citizens need to be more educated with the rules of the road and have to respect others that are driving as well.As a 20-year-old that has lost a friend a few years ago in a moped accident I have a few suggestions: if you are caught speeding, you should be automatically off the road for six months. If police see someone overtaking — they should get fined. They should also put a nightly curfew for 16-18 year olds so they don’t ride around at night. Police need to crack down on speed limits because the sign that blinks when a person is “driving over 30mph” just isn’t enough.Another suggestion: Project Ride needs to be revised by teaching young people more about road safety rather than simply the rules of the road. Even a movie on road safety before you can get your licence similar to a “scared straight” video with young adults that have driven recklessly and how it has affected their lives.Bermuda is a tiny Island, no matter how fast or slow you go — you will get to where you have to be!PEMBROKE
