Anglican bishopric election today
The new Anglican Bishop of Bermuda was set to be elected today.
Archdeacon Andrew Doughty and Reverend Patrick White are the two contenders in the Synod ballot taking place at the Cathedral from 10 a.m.
The post heading the Island's largest religious domination — with more than 14,000 potential worshippers — became vacant after the retirement six months ago of Ewen Ratteray, the first black and first Bermudian Bishop.
Archdeacon Doughty, 51, of St. Mary's in Warwick, has served as Archdeacon for four years and for a total of 13 years in Bermuda, with another 13 years' experience overseas.
Rev. White, 65, of St. Paul's in Paget, has served in the Anglican Church for 30 years, eight of which have been on the Island.
Both candidates have recently signalled their support for the ordination of women — something Bishop Ratteray was reported to oppose.
A communion service was scheduled for 9 a.m. today, followed by the ballot. If a clear winner is not established, a second ballot will be taken.
The winner will be the "Bishop designate" until he is officially sworn in at a future date.
