Stop the moral decline

August 23, 2012Dear Sir,Well! The hot topic is “gay rights”, and proposed amendments to the Human Rights Legislation. Why? To protect perceived discrimination of those who choose that lifestyle.Personally, I feel the human rights already in place encompasses all residents of Bermuda. We live in a democratic society — democracy meaning control of a group by the majority of its members.Legislation was recently passed regarding referenda. Shouldn’t this be the democratic process for deciding such a debatable topic? Or are we to see the abuse of authority, not power, because the power lies with the majority? Are we treading toward the threshold of moral bankruptcy? The Oxford English Dictionary defines moral as: 1. concerned with the principles of right or wrong behaviour examining the nature of ethics and the foundation of good and bad behaviour 2. based on or adhering to the code of behaviour that is considered “socially right or acceptable”.Our society is already under siege by a deterioration of values — we must ‘stop the rot’! No telling what will be next in the pipeline. Many regard Bermuda as a religious community. Religion in itself is not the answer. What’s required is spirituality; yes there is a difference!GLENN CHASEWarwick
