Colts up for Cougars in the cup
?We don?t fear Cougars.?
That?s the upbeat vibe in the Devonshire Colts camp ahead of their FA Cup second round clash with Devonshire Cougars tomorrow at the Den.
And outspoken coach Ray Jones is optimistic his squad ? a blend with youth and experience ? can upstage the Big Cats in their own back yard and come away with the upset ? even with prolific striker Raymond Beach back in the Cougars line up.
?It?s good for Bermuda football to see Beach back in the mix as he has been one of the most prolific goal scorers. But we never worry about who the opponent is. Our thing is to try to execute the game plan on the pitch,? Jones told
?We are not going to change our strategy because Beach is back in the fold. We don?t fear Cougars even with Beach back in the equation. We are basically going to show up with intensity because in the FA Cup every round is a one off deal. And may the best team win.?
Colts enter tomorrow?s contest buoyant from last weekend?s crucial league win over Boulevard Blazers.
Mathematically Colts still stand of chance of surviving in the top tier and Jones is banking on another big result against Cougars tomorrow to give his team the psychological boost needed to avoid relegation.
?With games running out I have already encouraged my players to give 100 percent effort towards trying to obtain the desired result,? the coach said. ?We intend to battle on and see where the chips fall at the end of the season.?
Jones witnessed Cougars? shock defeat against Blazers at the Den on Thursday night and was able to provide a brief assessment on the Big Cats? current form.
?I really thought Cougars had more than enough chances to wrap that match up. I thought overall their quality of play was excellent. They just lacked a little bit of intensity,? he said.
?I thought Cougars lacked execution in the final third. But in terms of the FA Cup, realistically this is Cougars? last chance of winning a major trophy and so I really think they will come out with their A game. I?m certain their fans have become accustomed to playing up on the carpet in recent years and so I expect them to be behind their team 100 percent.?
Colts will look to team stalwarts Shannon Burgess and MaKonnen Hollis to take charge. The two veteran players are the sole surviving members from Colts? 2001 victorious FA Cup team that defeated North Village 3-1 on the carpet.
Former Colts poacher Aljame Zuill is now enjoying success at new club Cougars.
Both teams, according to club sources, will be at full strength when the ball drops.
Elsewhere, defending FA Cup champions North Village are away to current First Division leaders Paget at White Hill Field while PHC Zebras ? smarting from a shock loss to Ireland Rangers on Thursday night ? take on Commercial outfit St.George?s All Stars on a Wellington Oval pitch that has traditionally haunted them.
The 2004 FA Cup champs Dandy Town take on First Division promotion hopefuls Wolves at St.John?s Field and last season?s beaten finalists Hamilton Parish take on 2002 semi-finalists St.George?s Colts at Lords.
Having now been relegated to the First Division despite picking up a first win of the season on Thursday against PHC, Ireland Rangers can keep their cup hopes alive when they host Somerset Eagles at Malabar, while 1984 FA champions Southampton Rangers take on three-time cup winners Social Club at Southampton Oval and 2003 beaten finalists Prospect United meet X Roads at Police Field.
