Man, 22, charged with Rising Sun

A 22-year-old Southampton man accused of the broad daylight robbery of Rising Sun Shop appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Schai Govia, of No 162 Middle Road, pleaded not guilty to eight offences which allegedly occurred on August 2.

Govia is charged with stealing a Bank of Butterfield cheque book valued at under $250 belonging to Anne Powell of the Rising Sun Shop and on the same day allegedly assaulting Mrs. Powell.

Govia was accused of forging the cheque for $100 which was drawn on the account of Rising Sun Shop in care of the Bank of Butterfield in favour of Kevin Simmons, and purporting it to be signed Mrs. Powell.

The court also heard that Govia allegedly uttered and forged another cheque for the same amount.

He was also accused of obtaining $89.60 and soft drinks to the value of $10.10 from an employee of Burrows & Lightbourne by falsely pretending that the cheque, drawn on the Rising Sun Shop account, was genuine.

Govia is also charged with forging and uttering a third cheque for the sum of $150 drawn on the said Bank of Butterfield account in favour of Kevin Simmons and purporting to be signed by the complainant Mrs. Powell.

And he was accused of obtaining goods from an employee of Modern Mart supermarket when he allegedly presented the cheque as a good and genuine one to an employee of that business.

Govia, who was not represented, is expected to return to court on December 3 for trial.
