Lister signs pacts on apprenticeships

Bermudian students who wish to take part in apprenticeship schemes in Nova Scotia, Canada will have the opportunity to enhance their skills through a joint agreement between Education Minister Terry Lister and the Education Minister of the province, Jamie Muir.

Mr. Lister recently returned from Halifax, Nova Scotia where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 2 that will govern all the arrangements affecting Bermudian students who wish to take advantage of apprenticeship schemes.

The National Training Board will also obtain advice and share ideas about advancing technical training and will work with the Nova Scotia Community College to get customised training for Bermudian students. While in Nova Scotia Mr. Lister met with Jeff Summerville ? Vice President of the Nova Scotia Community College ? with whom he also signed a memorandum of understanding. He also toured the campus which has more than 20,000 students, 100 programmes, and 13 campuses.

Nova Scotia?s Minister of the Environment and Labour Kerry Morash also discussed opportunities for Bermudian students to obtain two year post-graduate work experience in Nova Scotia.

Travelling through the United States on a similar mission, NTB Executive Training Officer Michael Stowe looked closely at US workforce development initiatives when they met with officials from the Rhode Island Human Resource Investment Council and the Rhode Island Workforce Investment Board.
