Reggie drives Trojans toward championship

Little Reggie Tucker stole the show in title favourites Somerset Trojans' 4-1 romp at relegation-threatened St. David's.

Tucker was the shortest player on the pitch but he stood head and shoulders above everyone else as he made his presence felt on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, scoring two goals and making two others.

St. David's offered resistance over the first half-hour of the game and matched Somerset stride for stride, but could not mount any serious challenges at goal.

Somerset were equally inept as St. David's defence, manned by Sherwin Hollis playing an unusual sweeper role, managed to keep the Trojans at bay.

What followed in the 31st minute caught everyone by surprise as Somerset scored four goals in the span of 11 minutes.

At the forefront of this scoring barrage was Reggie Tucker when he sent a perfect pass to the feet of Anthony Burchall. Burchall crossed from just outside the penalty box where a collision between St. David's goalkeeper George O'Brien and Somerset's Cordell Gilbert, saw the ball spill over for the score.

Two minutes later, Reggie Tucker scored when he latched onto a ball deep into the St. David's end of the field and managed to sneak one under the body of the outstretched 'keeper.

After such a promising start by St. David's, they were dealt another blow when Somerset scored their third goal in the 40th minute. Randy Simmons threw a ball in which was headed into the box by Kwame Tucker. The ball bounced free across goal where a defender should have cleared.

However, the defence procrastinated and Reggie Tucker swept in behind them and pounded the ball home from in close.

Somerset added insult to injury when they scored their fourth goal one minute later. Again, Reggie Tucker spearheaded the attack when he controlled play across the middle and fed a pass to Anthony Burchall. Burchall's shot from 15 yards out glanced off the leg of a defender and past the 'keeper.

In spite of the scoreline, the game was very physical with no play going unchallenged. Somerset's Armel Thomas and St. David's Charles Furbert were both forced from the game after suffering nasty gashes in the back of their heads in separate incidents.

Reggie Tucker later stated that Somerset were dedicating the game to team-mate Trevor Dickinson whose great grandmother recently passed away.

St. David's pulled a goal back late in the game when Eugene Crockwell was able to slot the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
