The television media reported last night that Mr. Smith, a PLP candidate in Pembroke West, evicted a tenant without a court order and left her belongings in the rain.

A PLP spokesman yesterday stated: "It was with great surprise that we learned of the uncharacteristic actions attributed to PLP candidate Mr. Rodney Smith this evening.'' The spokesman said Mr. Smith was expected to inform a Party committee today of the circumstances surrounding the event in hopes of reaching "a resolution satisfactory to all parties involved''.

"The Progressive Labour Party recognises that both tenants and landlord have rights and protection which are enshrined in legislation and we believe unequivocally that these procedures must be respected and upheld.'' When told of the situation, Housing Minister Wayne Furbert said it was "unfortunate'' that Mr. Smith had taken such action against the tenant.

"I am surprised that someone who is supposed to be a representative of the people would take such actions,'' said United Bermuda Party MP Mr. Furbert.

"Actions speak louder than words, and his actions have spoken for what he really believes in,'' he added.

Mr. Smith was unavailable for comment last night.
