Harrington's triple injury sparks Grand Slam concern

Bermuda-bound Padraig Harrington has pulled out of the Seve Trophy because of a cocktail of injuries just weeks before the 2007 Grand Slam of Golf.

Harrington is set to join Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera in elite foursome next month, but has been warned to take a two-week break from golf immediately.

The news will come as a concern to organisers still reeling from the gigantic loss of Tiger Woods, who announced he would not be travelling to the Island earlier this month. Woods plans to take nearly three months off after this week's Presidents Cup.

Harrington had been relishing his first competitive appearance as Open Champion in front of his home crowd at Killenard, playing for a Britain and Ireland team against Europe, and his decision to withdraw is a major blow to the event.

He revealed he is carrying no fewer than three injuries after playing three of four FedEx Cup play-off events, and claims a punishing end-of-season ordeal has left the game's leading players "distraught".

It will get even tougher for the stars of Europe and America next autumn when the climax to the FedEx Cup takes place the week before The Ryder Cup.

In a statement issued on his behalf by The European Tour, he said: "I'm afraid that I have been forced to withdraw because of fatigue and injuries relating to this condition. I have been advised by my trainer and physio to take a two week break from tournament golf immediately."

A chronic neck condition, an injury to his left knee and a strained thumb are the Irishman's injuries.

"I haven't had two consecutive weeks off since April and it usually takes a fortnight to recover properly," he added.

Harrington has played five tournaments in the past seven weeks in the States, with one week's break with his family in Orlando between the PGA Championship and the beginning of the four-strong FedEx Cup play-off series.

After playing in the first two events, The Barlcays and The Deutsche Bank, an exhausted Harrington gave the third, The BMW in Cog Hill a miss, only returning for last weekend's Tour Championship after qualifying in 30th and final place.

A jaded final round 73 on Sunday, which saw Harrington tie for 11th place behind runaway tournament and FedEx Cup-winner Tiger in Atlanta on Sunday night, underlined just how taxing his Open victory and its joyous aftermath had been for the Irishman.
