The Policeman at the centre of a probe into the apparent suicide of his Smith's Parish girlfriend has been arrested in connection with the death.

Tony Bukhari, 31, was picked up by detectives yesterday afternoon just after an inquest into the death of Elizabeth Cadell adjourned for the weekend.

Mr. Bukhari was sipping coffee in the Twice Told Tales coffee shop, directly opposite Magistrates' Court, when Police pounced.

A Police spokeswoman later confirmed the former officer, who came to the Island in 1990, had been picked up.

"Bukhari was arrested this afternoon at 4.30 p.m.,'' she said.

"He is now being held in a detaining cell at Hamilton Police Station and is likely to face charges of manslaughter. The arrest was made on the instruction of the Attorney General. He is likely to appear in plea court on Monday.'' Ms Cadell, 33, a former Royal Gazette sub-editor, died after taking an overdose of drugs at the couple's Harvey Hill Road home on May 31 last year.

Mr. Bukhari found her naked body in the bedroom of their apartment after returning from a jog in the afternoon. Senior Coroner Will Francis has been presiding over an inquest into the death since Monday.

But the arrest means that the inquest, held to determine how Ms Cadell died, will be called off.

Yesterday a jury of six men and two women heard more evidence from Police colleagues of Mr. Bukhari, including evidence from Chief Inspector Sinclair White, who trained Bukhari in first aid when he first arrived on the Island.

And Det. Sgt Antoine Daniels gave evidence concerning Bukhari's movements while he was at work as an acting Sgt. at St. George's Police Station on the evening of May 30 -- the night before Ms Cadell died.

A statement made by Ms Cadell's friend and colleague, former Royal Gazette sub editor Steve Mundy, was also read out to the inquest.

"Liz was a good friend and had been my shift partner for the past few months,'' Mr. Mundy had told Police.

Describing the occassion he last saw her on the night before she died, Mr.

Mundy said: "Liz and I were working on the 2.p.m. to 10.p.m. shift.

"Liz bought a pizza and I had two pieces. I told her to take the rest of it back to Tony. She was doing foreign news that night and left the office at about 8.30 p.m.

"Before leaving she was her normal self -- friendly, outgoing and confident.

Her last words to me were `I'll see you on Sunday'.
