St George’s Cricket Club and PHC have successfully appealed against Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) sanctions imposed on their cricketers earlier this year.But their cases will be reheard by a BCB Disciplinary Committee.St George’s’ duo Detroy Smith and Macai Simmons and PHC’s Khiry Furbert all received lengthy bans stemming from two separate incidents alleged to have occurred during the two teams’ home and away 50-over Premier matches last season.The trio are alleged to have been involved in heated confrontations that marred the matches at Wellington Oval on July 3 and PHC Field on August 20. Smith was eventually hit with a three-year ban, Furbert received a two-year ban while Simmons was suspended from playing cricket for nine months after the trio were found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.St George’s’ officials felt that their players did not receive a fair hearing and filed appeals against the subsequent rulings that were eventually upheld by an Appeals Committee.“St George’s Cricket Club was not only disappointed but surprised with the BCB suspensions of Macai Simmons and Detroy Smith,” commented club secretary Raoul Ming. “We do agree with and support the rules of the game. However, the process used to arrive at the suspension decisions was questionable.”PHC vice-president Mark Wade said: “We have a minor victory in that the case will be reheard. The Appeals Committee obviously saw some merit in the points we raised in our appeal and recommended that the case be reheard.”St George’s and PHC have also been refunded the Appeals Fee ($250 per player) they paid to the BCB.
