A new dock has been built at an East End park, despite the lack of government approval for the work.Workers at the site said the dock, at Rocky Hill Park in St George’s, was a replacement for one that had fallen into disrepair.A worker at the site, who said he was the project engineer, but asked not to be named, said construction of the dock was an “integral action”.He added that the original dock had been no longer safe for public use.The man said: “Government isn’t fixing it, so we did. “We built this for the community down here because the old dock was falling apart. It was a health hazard. “What we put together is going to stay there. This will be there for the rest of our lives and for our children.”He added that the group lost patience and started the job without permission because the Government had failed to tackle the problem. The man said that he was not worried about the possibility of a fine because the dock would benefit everyone in the area.He said: “Black lives matter. What we want matters. If we wait for the Government, it will never get done.”The man said the project was community-driven and would be an extra attraction at the public park without any cost to taxpayers.He added: “We spent about $10,000 on materials, not to mention all the labour.”Another worker at the site said: “If the Government really cares, they will write the workers a cheque because we are doing it for the people.”Kim Swan, the MP for the area, said he would reserve comment until after the Government had examined the case.The Ministry of Home Affairs did not respond to a request for comment.
