Swings at a popular Shelly Bay park have been removed after being repeatedly damaged.

A resident complained earlier this year that an infant swing at the park had multiple missing rivets which created a potential safety hazard.

The swing was repaired, but residents earlier this month complained that the same problem had arisen again.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said the infant swings at the park will be replaced with more durable equipment.

The spokesman added: “The Ministry can advise that the Department of Parks make the best effort to monitor and assess playground and other equipment located on public property to ensure it is safe and fit for use.

“However, there remains the potential for the equipment to incur damage. In this instance, unless the Department is made aware, the issue will remain until the following assessment is carried out.

“With that said, the Ministry and Department of Parks wish to thank and show our appreciation to those members of the public who make every effort to send notifications of any issues they observe.”

The Department has begun work to identify “more robust and durable” swings that can better withstand Bermuda’s environment, added the spokesman.

“The public is advised that when using any equipment located on public grounds, check to ensure it is not compromised or poses a danger to users.”
