Onions close gap on leaders

MR Onions? 3-0 victory over Tuff Dogs put them in touching distance of league leaders Lobster Pot in the Commercial A Division as the rest of the league sat out Saturday?s fixtures because of wet weather.

Onions are just a point behind with two games in hand after overcoming Dogs on a partly waterlogged BAA pitch.

Missing influential midfielder Mike Neville, Onions played mainly down the flanks but the final ball into the middle was poor with the wind playing a major factor.

The breakthrough came just before half-time when a good ball from the right was met first time by Eoghan O?Dwyer who lifted it over the keeper.

This stirred Tuff Dogs and Nathan Brown came close with a volley before a good free kick was cleared in the six-yard box by Steve Smith.

Onions started the second half playing some flowing football with their frontline stretching the Tuff Dogs defence.

And it wasn?t long before Colin Keane finished unmarked at the back post.

The third goal came from a break down the right. The ball was worked between a number of Onions players before a fine cross from Eoghan O?Dwyer was nodded home by Keane.

This brought about a number of changes for Onions with manager Steve Smith bringing on all five substitutes as the game appeared safe.

Onions now await the re-arranged fixture with Key West which could prove decisive in their title challenge.

In Division B player inactivity was as much to blame as the weather for the lack of football.

Dockyard Falcons picked up a 3-0 over Wolves who turned up with just four players while a no-show by Prison Officers at their home pitch of Malabar meant Boulevard got all the points.

Neither Hamilton Parish nor Prospect/Fire could muster a side and so both teams go without the points.

A waterlogged St. John?s Field put paid to Dandy Town Roots against Devonshire All-Stars and Vasco against St. George?s All-Stars.

Pest Control and Somerset Extros had already called off their game which will go ahead under the floodlights at Somerset Cricket Club tonight at 7.00.
