Art and shoes combine at Perry Footwear

Perry Footwear will turn from a glamorous shoe store into an art auction tonight as Shayla Thomas presents her one-of-a-kind paintings.

The event, Art is Fashion, will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to not only buy shoes but also bid on Miss Thomas's work.

Miss Thomas began painting at the age of four.

She said she enjoys painting various things, but prefers abstract and pop art.

"I might look at a magazine, or a photo of someone might look nice to me and then I say 'OK I'll paint that' and then I experiment and however it comes out, it comes out. Most of the time I do stuff just for fun. I might do a few things for friends but I am trying to sell things now.

"I'm looking forward to getting my name out as an artist so that Bermudians can know they can come to me if they need something."

Tiffany Perry, of Perry Footwear, explained how the idea for the auction came to be.

"We always do shopping nights and we thought, 'what if we collaborated to get her name out there?' All of her artwork will be sold in a silent bidding.

"It's going to be a fun night even if people just come to support Shayla."

Miss Thomas said she is hoping to have ten new pieces for sale along with a few older works.

"I hope people come and support a student trying to make a living and local talent. I am very well-rounded. Even though I like to paint, I like to make jewellery and clothing."

In addition to the paintings, a shoe by designer Stuart Weisman will be auctioned off.

Cocktails and light refreshments are on offer for the night as well as a 30 percent discount off everything in the store.

Door prize winners will receive one of two $50 I-Store gift certificates and one lucky shopper will get two nights free at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
