Donawa backs Bermuda for strong showing in Trinidad

Pumped up: Mouchette will makes his debut at the senior level in today’s Nacac Cross Country Championships in Trinidad

Bermuda’s team will be looking to put their best foot forward at today’s Nacac Cross Country Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.

Flying the Island’s banner in the men’s eight-kilometre event at the regional championships are Lamont Marshall, Juma Mouchette, Trey Simons and Jay Donawa, who is the most senior runner in the squad.

This year marks Marshall’s second straight appearance at the championships, having been Bermuda’s sole runner at the previous event in Mandeville, Jamaica, while Mouchette and Simons are making their debut at the senior level.

Marshall placed fifteenth last year while Mouchette recorded the fastest time among the local junior men after covering the 4km course in 22min 52sec.

The championships are being held at the golf course adjacent to the Mt Irvine Bay Hotel in Tobago, where the Bermuda’s team are staying. The undulating course consists of four 2km loops.

Bermuda’s runners arrived in the Caribbean on Thursday night and, according to Donawa, are excited about the big occasion.

“The boys are up for it and I believe Lamont, Trey and Juma will run well,” said Donawa, who has competed in this event since 1996. “The expectations of the team is to have all four of us finish as strongly as possible and secure a good team position.

“The conditions are warm but what we expected in Tobago this time of the year. We will run hard regardless and represent Bermuda well.”

Bermuda’s runners, who are due to return to the Island tomorrow, will be up against rivals from the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and the host country.

Bermuda competed in the men’s, women’s and junior divisions at the previous championships.
