Injury-hit squash team win CASA opener
An injury-plagued Bermuda squash team fought against the odds to win their first match in the 2007 Senior CASA Squash Championships team event in Kingston, Jamaica.
Playing against Guyana, the Islanders reshuffled their playing order due to an ankle injury picked up by Patrick Foster with Nick Kyme taking the number one spot.
The change paid off with Kyme finding the form he displayed when playing on the professional circuit, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 (9-3, 9-3, 9-1) win against Julian Chin.
Number two Foster also won his match against Robert McDavid in three straight games (9-1, 9-0, 9-2), but team-mate Mel Caines, making his first appearance in the championships after sustaining a hamstring injury, was unable to play to his full potential against Alex Arjoon, losing 3-0 (8-10, 2-9, 4-9).
Michael Shrubb, the youngest member of the team, had an impressive match against Raphael DeGroot and sealed the win for Bermuda with an emphatic 3-0 victory (9-5, 9-5, 9-1)
Richard Van Liendon had a walkover in his match, with Bermuda defeating Guyana 4-1.
Bermuda squash spokesman Roger Sherratt said: "We had been very concerned about our number one player and national champion Patrick Foster who injured his ankle just before flying to Jamaica.
"It contributed to him losing his second match in the singles despite being number one seed the tournament. One of our other players, Mel Caines, also sustained a hamstring injury so this win was a real boost to the team."
Bermuda's next match will be a tough encounter against the home nation Jamaica.
