Saul pledges `peace and prosperity'
that he has committed himself to lowering the temperature of the Island by creating harmony, peace and tranquility.
And he also told them he "fervently believed that only with those things can good decisions be made''.
"I want to advance the peace, prosperity and welfare of these Islands at all levels,'' he said. "We need respect for each other, peace so children can learn in the classrooms, peace on the jobs and prosperity for all of us.
"We are on the edge of a new Bermuda, help me to help you.'' Earlier Dr. Saul also said he guaranteed the public a breath of fresh air in Parliament.
"We are going to stop the personal fights in the House so we can do the people's business.'' But American guest speaker the Rev. Otis Moss III reminded Dr. Saul that while having those things were good other things had to be added.
"With peace you have to add justice and with that comes oppression, with prosperity you have to add equality and with that comes evil, and with tranquillity comes mutual respect but with that comes abuse. And if we are to move as people onto a higher plane we must know these.'' Pledging the BIU's respect for the new Premier, Bermuda Industrial Union president Mr. Ottiwell Simmons presented Dr. Saul as "the new kid on the block''.
"Bermuda people have respect for Government and the law whether we like them or not,'' he said. "The Premier has pledged that he is a people's man.'' Mr. Simmons commented on the fact that the Bermuda Regiment was not able to march in the parade from union headquarters to the park.
"My taxes, the workers taxes, and all union organisation taxes make up the Bermuda Regiment band therefore, we must not be denied the use of that band because it is rightfully ours. I am disappointed that they did not march.'' Shadow Home Affairs Minister Mr. Alex Scott, who took the place of Opposition leader Mr. Frederick Wade, said former Premier Sir John Swan put the idea of Independence back in the forefront of people's minds.
He added: "The role for providing leadership for this Country falls to labour. We must not conduct a policy of exclusion but inclusion. We must realise that we as a family must labour ourselves as we did during the abstain campaign in the Independence referendum.
"We must decide what will be in the best interest of labour and Bermuda.
Labour is not just the BIU and other unions, it is not just the political opposition it is a broad family.'' Home Affairs Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness said Dr. E.F. Gordon -- whose 100th birthday was yesterday -- was a man who brought to Bermuda "a high level of professional medical excellence and a depth of social concern and affinity for the plight of the Bermudian workforce''.
"Respect for human rights, decent living standards, humane working conditions, employment opportunities and economic security are the core elements of justice to which Dr. Gordon dedicated his life to achieve for the workers of Bermuda. They are also the core elements of justice and concern to which the Government of Bermuda has committed itself.'' He added that as the new appointed minister of Home Affairs: "It shall be my goal to do whatever I can in this area to enhance the peace, prosperity and welfare of the people of these Islands.
"I intend to ensure that preference and protection is given unequivocally to all qualified Bermudians in the workplace, and to assist those who are not qualified to become qualified in order to have an equal opportunity to jobs.
"I intend to ensure that the women of Bermuda are treated equally in all areas of employment. I will also endeavour to ensure that all guest workers are treated fairly and justly. It is the Government's intention to deal justly and fairly with the legitimate claims of both employers and employees, a balanced approach which protects the interest of Bermudians.'' General Secretary of the Bermuda Public Services Association Mr. Eugene Blakeney told the crowd that he was an advocate of Independence and he could not understand why "wise leaders in a healthy economy'' could say Bermuda was not ready for Independence "that is absolute nonsense, who wants to be a British dependent Citizen?'' BPSA president Mrs. Leleath Bailey said with the new Premier she wanted to see affirmative action and equal opportunities for women.
Mrs. Bailey added that Dr. Saul made promises which "we feel maybe feel comfortable about'' but she added "don't get too comfortable''.
