Bread still costs the same as it did three months ago, while potatoes were more expensive in October compared to July, according to the latest price survey by The Royal Gazette.

A loaf of Sunbeam white bread remained at $4.75, with a 5lb bag of potatoes rising on average by $1 from about $4.99 to $5.99.

Our check on price of provisions in three of Bermuda's main supermarket chains revealed that the cost of 20 randomly-selected goods in October was similar to those of July.

The items ranged from bread, milk and eggs to pizza, cookies and ice cream on offer at the MarketPlace in Church Street, Supermart in Front Street and Lindo's in Devonshire this week. A number of the items were not available in some of the stores.

Despite the 6.5 inflation rate for food in August, according to Government's consumer price index, the price of most items on our list were very similar.

The CPI said that oranges (11.1 percent), flour (10.5 percent) and fresh lettuce (9.4 percent) were the main contributors to food inflation.

Other big increases included fresh pork loin (7.5 percent) sweet biscuits (6.2 percent) and eggs (5.2 percent).

Meanwhile the Island's food tariffs currently stand at 22.25 percent for sugary treats like chocolate and chewing gum to nothing for basic food stuffs such as milk, rice, cereal and raw sugar.

All of the rest of the prices, apart from bread and potatoes, varied from store to store, while some items were on promotion in the different supermarkets.
