The new Building Amendment Act 1998 will enable all aspects of the building code to be brought under one piece of legislation and will give Government power to enforce rules.

In addition, Senators who passed the Act yesterday hoped there could be some sort of professional code for builders and tradesmen across Bermuda.

Senator Terry Lister (PLP) said the Act was a good idea and hoped a new code would eventually be brought about for professionals in the construction trade.

He said that would help those people who suffered at the hands of rogue traders and would enhance the reputation of the good workers on the Island.

Sen. Walwyn Hughes (Ind) agreed that such a code would be useful for employers and the public.

Introducing the Act, Sen. Allan Marshall (UBP) said the Act would bring all aspects of building regulation into one basket, creating a Bermuda residential building code.

It would consolidate plumbing, electrical and other aspects of construction work under one piece of legislation, that would be a help to architects and others in the trade.
