the Premier's Commission on Competitiveness, the National Liberal Party chairman said yesterday.

"It's supposed to be a non-political organisation,'' Mr. Geoff Parker said.

Mr. Dodwell "wouldn't let me come on'' to the commission, "because of my political activity,'' he added.

"What's good for the goose is good for the gander.'' Mr. Dodwell last night reacted with shock to Mr. Parker's remarks. He said the NLP chairman had his facts wrong about his position on the Commission and he had no knowledge of an application by Mr. Parker to join any part of it. He had no intention of resigning, he added.

Mr. Dodwell, president of the Bermuda Hotel Association and owner of The Reefs, was recently adopted as a United Bermuda Party candidate in Southampton West.

Although Mr. Parker described Mr. Dodwell as "the deputy chairman'' of the Commission on Competitiveness, Mr. Dodwell said he is a member of the planning committee of the commission's tourism wing.

As president of the BHA, he was named to the committee chaired by Mr. James Masters, along with Tourism Director Mr. Gary Phillips and Bermuda College Dean of the Faculty of Business and Hotel Administration Mr. Michael Conlin.

"I had nothing whatsoever to do with the other appointments,'' he said. "I'm surprised and shocked that he would say that.'' Asked if he felt he should resign, Mr. Dodwell said: "Absolutely not. I was appointed as president of the hotel association.'' His term as president of the BHA expires in early November. PTL Electrical contractor Mr. Calvin H.W. Simons is a candidate for the United Bermuda Party in Southampton East.

And businessman Mr. Matthew Lindo is expected to fight Southampton West for the National Liberal Party.

The UBP is expected to formally announce the candidacies of Mr. Simons and his running mate shortly. The NLP is expected to name two East End candidates this weekend.
