A Court Street shopkeeper is strengthening security after a man armed with a knife robbed his store on Saturday.

As shops in the area were closing up for the day, a terrorised employee at the Shoe Centre found herself confronted with a knife brandishing stranger.

The attack occurred at 4:25 p.m. when a light-skinned man wearing a blue crash helmet forced open a cash register at knife point, Police reported. He left the store after helping himself to an undisclosed amount of cash.

Although uninjured, the woman was still extremely shaken by the ordeal yesterday, and unable to comment.

"She is still very upset,'' said store manager Mrs. Mavis Henry. "She is on medication because of it.'' The incident is the third armed robbery in the Court Street area this month.

On November 2, a St. George's man was robbed at knife point by three thugs on Angle Street and punched in the face.

The following night, three men robbed a man on Court Street. One produced a handgun before taking cash from the man. The incident followed the robbing at gunpoint of the Pleasant View Variety on North Shore Road, 45 minutes earlier.

Mrs. Henry who manages the family-style shoe store with her husband, said yesterday she thought the shop had been singled out by the attacker.

"We are increasing security because of this,'' Mrs. Mavis Henry said yesterday. "In fact we are doing something about it today.'' Inspector Roseanda Jones said Police are investigating the attack and appealing to anyone in the area who may have seen the offender.

The man is described as five feet ten inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. At the time of the attack he was wearing a tan "V'' neck pullover and blue jeans.

"Someone would have seen something,'' said Inspector Jones. "There would have been lots of people closing up their shops at that time.'' Anyone with information should call Central CID at 295-0011.

Police are recommending that businesses consult their brochure on robbery prevention.

The brochure urges shop employees to watch for customers acting suspiciously and to alert management.

If the robber is armed, it says, it is best not to take any physical action.

Instead, victims of a robbery are advised to remain calm and observant and pay special attention to what the robber is doing and saying.
