And Police are investigating why the motorist was punched while he was driving the group of six home.

That punch while the car was moving started a violent and frightening assault and the attack on the vehicle.

The 58-year-old driver, from Devonshire, claims he was driving from St.

George's around 3 a.m. when he spotted the four men and two women. Police report that he offered them a lift.

Police Community Relations Officer Sgt. John Dale said: "When they had reached North Shore Road, not far from Radnor Road, apparently one of the persons hit the driver in the head which caused him to pull over.

"The people got out of the car and started damaging the vehicle. The driver was further assaulted by a thump in the mouth.'' The group continued to attack the vehicle as the terrified driver tried to make his escape. They smashed the car's rear window, broke the windscreen wipers and dented the bonnet.

Sgt. Dale said that detectives are trying to get to the bottom of the incident.

Anyone with information who saw the incident in the early hours of Wednesday should contact Det. Sgt. Stuart Crockwell at the Eastern CID.

Police reported another assault in which a man was attacked and required 22 stitches in a head wound.

The assault occurred on Elliott Street in Hamilton during an altercation between two men.

The 32-year-old Hamilton Parish man was taken to hospital and needed the stitches in a wound to his ear.

A 25-year-old Warwick man was arrested in connection with the incident.

Inquiries are continuing.
