Regiment is praised for its Jamaican training exercises
Minister of Home Affairs David Burch said Bermudians should be proud of Regiment soldiers who are training in Jamaica.
Senator Burch visited the troops last week along with Governor Sir Richard Gozney while the troops were overseas on Operation Irie Onion.
Yesterday the Minister said: "Members of the Bermuda Regiment are in Jamaica for a rigorous series of military exercises aimed at sharpening their tactical and survival skills under adverse conditions as part of the annual overseas camp."
The Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) hosted the Bermuda Regiment; the two organisations have had a working relationship for 30 years.
While there they have practised conventional warfare, improved weapon handling and shooting skills, and developed management and leadership skills among other things.
The Regiment's boat troop also spent time learning from the Jamaican Coast Guard while the Regiment police were attached to the Jamaican military police and participated in routine security patrols and worked at the JDF's detention facility. Regiment engineers also painted a local primary school and installed a new water tank and pump.
On Sunday the Bermuda Regiment participated in a parade and football match against the JDF, which it lost. Their training will end tomorrow when they begin 36 hours of rest and relaxation in Montego Bay before coming home.
While there Sen. Burch also met with the Jamaican National Security minister and the Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff Major General Stewart Saunders.
Sen. Burch said: "Let me express my thanks to the Jamaican Defence Force, the Government and people of Jamaica for the continuing hand of friendship and support they provide to the Bermuda Regiment over the more than 30-year relationship.
"It is clear that the robust training undertaken by the Bermuda Regiment on overseas camps is something we can all be proud of. Their efforts in representing themselves, our Regiment and our Country are to be commended. We are extremely proud of them."
