Lopes to team up with Lines for CEA competition in Cayman Islands
After their fourth-place finish at last weekend during the opening leg of the 2010 Caribbean Equestrian Association's (CEA) Junior Jumping Competition in Barbados, Bermuda will be looking to move up the ladder when they travel to the Cayman Islands in two weeks for the second leg.
Representing Bermuda in the Caymans will be Tyler Lopes and Julia Lines who will be making her international debut.
Lopes, one of Bermuda's most experienced young show jumpers at international level, was teamed with Hayley Ball for the Barbados leg and they placed fourth overall.
Ball was riding in her first international competition and had a fall in round one but then bounced back and finished the competition with a stellar three clear rounds out of four.
Lopes had a tough weekend although he finished up with the fastest clear round in round four to take top honours in that round.
The first leg of the CEA was won by Jamaica, with Trinidad second and hosts Barbados third.
Coach and team manager McKeisha Smith who accompanied the riders to Barbados, said: "Both riders rode very well and I was extremely pleased with Hayley's performance. She had a tough week leading up to the event where she was lacking confidence. Nevertheless she rode some of the best jumping rounds of the competition and I am very proud of her."
Lopes and Lines will now travel to the Caymans for the competition set for March 20 and 21.
Lines rides out of Spiceland's Riding Centre and she won the CEA trials two weeks ago and is looking forward to the competition. She will ride in the 14 & Under age group while Lopes will ride in the 16 & Under age group.
This competition tests the riders' skills as they ride local horses and only have five minutes to get used to them. Bermuda will compete against host country Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Trinidad.
The Bermuda leg of the competition will be held on May 8 and 9 and will play host to Barbados, Cayman and Jamaica.
