Village and me – it's the perfect fit

As a football crazy youngster, North Village provided me with my initial education as a player. Therefore it seems fitting that I'll now be teaching their current crop of players some of the lessons I learned during my professional career. As a North Village boy through and through, I'm thrilled to be taking over the coaching reins at Bernard Park as I look to make my mark in my first head coaching role.

Obviously I performed coaching duties with Bermuda Hogges over the last two seasons as Kyle Lightbourne's assistant, but the big difference now is that it's going to be me who is calling all the shots.

To be honest, when it comes to footballing matters, Kyle and me have a very similar view on how the game should be played, but of course there are always little things you disagree upon.

It's certainly going to be strange being in opposite dug-outs to Kyle when Village take on PHC later this season and it will be a great challenge for me to go up against coaches I respect like him and Andrew Bascome, to name just a few.

Since my return to the Island, I've always had one eye on eventually coaching Village but due to my business commitments I wasn't sure whether I could devote sufficient time to the job.

The Rams have had a mixed bag of results so far this season and with Elliott Jennings having some personal things to deal with, I was approached by the club about taking over. I didn't have to think long as it felt like the correct time for me.

I was actually in charge for Village's recent games against Hamilton Parish and Devonshire Cougars and I'd attended quite a few of the Rams' games earlier in the season, so it's not as if I'm going in blind-folded.

Of course, I've already worked with the likes of Ralph Bean, Kofi Dill, Robert Wilson, Jemeiko Jennings, Keishen Bean and Keith Jennings and that's certainly made it easier for me. So far I've been delighted with the response of the players and they're starting to realise what I'm about and what I expect from them.

We have a very talented bunch of players and we just need to discover that level of consistency and discipline which has eluded us so far this campaign.

For me Village's absence from the Dudley Eve has probably been a blessing as it's allowed me more time to work with the players and it's certainly going to be interesting times for me.

Village have always been one of the powerhouse clubs on the Island and a team that's enjoyed plenty of attention and focus. That would be the case whether or not I was head coach and I know I have a responsibility to try and carry on our rich tradition.

We are synonymous with a certain style of play and have always produced certain types of footballers, many of whom have gone on to play professionally. But my immediate aim is to get us moving on up the league table as soon as possible.
