Darrell stands pat on starters

line-up from that which drew 1-1 against the United States Olympic team for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against Antigua at the National Stadium (8 p.m.

start).

Former captain Albert Smith, dropped after failing to show for Bermuda's preliminary-round match against Haiti, has regained favour with Darrell and will occupy a midfield spot alongside Paul Cann, Kentoine Jennings and Shawn Goater. Smith's inclusion comes at the expense of Kenny Thompson, who had shown well in previous matches against Haiti and Antigua, scoring against the latter.

"Tough decision,'' said Darrell of the choice of Smith following a training session at the stadium. "Kenny's been playing well but I've decided to go with the same line-up that started against the US in Norfolk. For the first half that was the best we've played for the past three games and usually I try, if things have gone well with a particular line-up, not to make too many changes if I can.'' Thompson had hurt his back while with the team overseas and was not at last night's session, however his omission still comes as somewhat of a surprise with Smith having not looked particularly inspiring prior to the most recent match.

Also retaining their positions were strikers Elliott Jennings and Kyle Lightbourne. Jennings has a high work rate and will probably act as the target man.

Lightbourne, this past season's league leading goal-scorer, has endured lean times as a member of the squad. He has been the target of abuse from fans and was relegated to the substitutes' bench in Antigua although he did start against the United States.

Said Darrell: "Kyle and Elliott up front -- not only when they had the ball but what they were doing without it -- had a lot to do with how well we played in Norfolk...and are earning this opportunity.'' In a 4-4-2 formation Goater seems to have found a new lease stacked up just behind the front men, having a bit more time on the ball and is an added threat to the defence coming from further back.

"Apart from what he is doing with the ball I think he gives good information,'' said Darrell, the second person to manage a local side in the World Cup. "He and Kentoine link up very well and he seems to be able to get a lot more of the ball, so he can do things and help his game to blossom and give encouragement to the others.'' With Albert Caisey out due to religious beliefs -- as is midfielder Voorhees Astwood -- what has been a stingy back four again comprises skipper Meshach Wade at right-back, Leroy Stevens and Shawn Smith in the middle and Neil Paynter on the left. Provided he stays away from the `sushi bar' Dwayne (Streaker) Adams is set to perform the goalkeeping chores.

One thing Darrell may have to watch out for is over-confidence among his men.

Antigua have drawn one match and lost two -- including 7-0 against Trinidad and Tobago in the Shell Caribbean Cup -- since being beaten by Bermuda but they still must not be taken lightly.

Players appeared relaxed and quite sure of themselves at yesterday's training session, which saw them practice corner kicks and other set-pieces. But Darrell said that this is normal and they will have their game faces on come Saturday.

"They're like this all the time...almost up to the day of the kick-off, said Darrell. "They're always kind of loose and fairly confident. But usually when it comes to game time you see a change in attitude showing that they know the job at hand.'' In what has become a pre-match ritual, the squad will stay together the night before the match, this time choosing the Belmont Hotel as their quarters.
