Crunch weekend for struggling trio

While Somerset Trojans, North Village, Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars will all try to keep pace with league leaders Boulevard over the weekend, Paget, PHC and St. David's will be looking to steer clear of the relegation zone as the 2006-07 season heads towards the final stretch.

All three of the Premier Division's cellar dwellers find themselves facing tough matches at home.

Lions welcome newly crowned Dudley Eve champions Somerset to White Hill Field in a match in which the home team will be looking to take at least a point off their high-riding opponents.

Trojans thrashed Paget 4-1 at Somerset last October in the first meeting between the two clubs since the 2004 First Division Shield final which Trojans won 7-1 at Wellington Oval.

And Dennis Brown's men should have things all their way again as the West Enders attempt to reel in league leaders Blazers and land a first championship since 1992-93.

Dandy Town, who now have nothing left to play for other than a second league title in three seasons, are faced with a tricky away match against Warriors at Lords. Town defeated St.David's 2-0 at St.John's Field in October to pick up their first league win of the season. And they will have to come away with nothing short of three points if they are to keep their fading league hopes alive against a team who only have a solitary point to show for their efforts since being promoted at the beginning of the season.

At Southampton Oval fluttering PHC take on defending league champions North Village in a match neither team can afford to lose.

Zebras will be looking to distance themselves from the bottom of the pile while Village will be trying to keep the defence of their title intact.

The Reds beat Zebras 3-1 at Bernard Park last December to avenge an earlier 1-0 Martonmere Cup loss to Kyle Lightbourne's team. But both teams have struggled this season with the absence of key players and have really yet to fire on all cylinders.

League leaders Boulevard and Devonshire Cougars were to have battled it out at the Den last night. But that match was suddenly called off by the BFA late yesterday without explanation and will now also be played tomorrow with Boulevard hoping to stretch their lead at the top.

In First Division action, third-placed Wolves can make up ground on idle second-placed Devonshire Colts who have had their match with landlords Prospect United at Prospect postponed.

Wolves stumbled against X Roads last weekend in a scrappy affair at the Den, and now face an even sterner test against league leaders Ireland Rangers at Malabar.

The two clubs met each other twice in the recently concluded Dudley Eve, which Wolves won, each coming away victorious on one occasion.

Elsewhere, X Roads are gunning for their fifth win of the season against visiting Southampton Rangers at Garrison Field buoyed by last weekend's inspiring win over Wolves.

At Lords, Kenny Thompson's Somerset Eagles should overpower Hamilton Parish while St.George's will be seeking to win their second in a row when they travel to Bernard Park to take on Social Club.
