<Bz49>Meshach recalled for national squad training

Somerset Trojans’ inspirational midfielder Meshach Wade and North Village’s diminutive striker Shayne Hollis are the latest two players to be invited to train with the national squad for next month’s Digicel Caribbean Cup triangular play-off with Haiti and the Dominican Republic at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Wade, a former Bermuda captain, last represented the Island during the 2004 World Cup qualifying campaign, while Hollis has trained consistently with the senior national squad but has yet to make his debut.

Hollis, who is scheduled to depart for Florida in the new year to participate in a high performance football camp, scored a cracking goal against Trojans last Sunday at Bernard Park during Village’s 3-0 win.

“Meshach (Wade) has been playing quite well for Somerset and he also brings along with him a lot of experience,” Bermuda coach Kyle Lightbourne said yesterday.

“Whether or not he takes that opportunity is now all up to him. We are also looking at young Shayne (Hollis) was training with us just prior to the trip to the Barbados for the last tournament.”

Bermuda take on Dominican Republic under floodlights at the NSC in their first match on Tuesday, December 12 and Haiti at the same venue on Saturday, December 16. Lightbourne, however, had mixed reaction to yesterday’s draw.

“I’d rather have played the last two games, because then we would have known exactly what we needed to do,” he said.

Bermuda defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 in the US Virgin lslands last September in the first round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup.

Incidentally, Lightbourne scored against Haiti at the NSC in 1992 in a World Cup qualifier.

“We have home court advantage, and this is what we will have to use,” the former Coventry City striker added.

“We will have to use the fast pitch at the Sports Centre to our advantage. And I encourage the fans to come out to support us in our endeavours.”
