THE JOB
Age: 29
Role: Excess casualty insurance broker, Bowring Marsh (Bermuda) Ltd.
What is your job? As a global organisation, the main focus of Marsh is to help our clients assess and manage their risk exposures. At Bowring Marsh here in Bermuda, our focus is to place insurance with the Bermuda insurance market on our clients' behalf. As a broker, I negotiate with numerous insurance companies to attain the best available liability insurance coverage for our clients. To facilitate this process, I host underwriting meetings, negotiate with underwriters to satisfy the client's needs and entertain clients who visit Bermuda. My job also entails promoting the Bermuda insurance market elsewhere in the world, so I travel to major cities in the US in order to present the capabilities and solutions that the Bermuda market can offer.
What is your favourite part of the job? Successfully building multi-million dollar insurance programmes. Every client has different challenges and needs and when I am able to utilise my contacts in the Bermuda market to find creative solutions for these complex risks, it gives me a feeling of accomplishment.
What is your least favourite part of the job? I am still relatively junior in my line of business, which means that I am required to handle many of the more tedious and administrative parts of the job. However, this enables me to work with a large segment of our client base, which is invaluable for my personal and professional growth.
What is your most interesting experience at work? It is interesting to see the different approaches and personalities. To succeed, brokers must be very personable and it is interesting to try to understand where people are coming from and what shapes their thought processes. When dealing with an underwriter and a client, I have to figure out the best way to mediate between the two parties.
What would you be doing otherwise? I have always had a background in sports and, if I hadn't been fortunate enough to find a place in the insurance industry, I probably would have been a physiotherapist or personal trainer.
