Undefeated Renegades in ‘double’ triumph
All-conquering Renegades have completed a league and cup double after finishing the domestic rugby season undefeated.Renegades put the finishing touches to a memorable campaign by beating Mariners 19-5 in the men’s Nichol Shield final at North Field to maintain their unbeaten record. They had already stormed to a league triumph the team’s first for five years to help ease the disappointment of failing to lift a single piece of silverware last season.Rather than relying any one individual, Renegades skipper Paul Dobinson believes hard work and dedication have been the bedrock of the side’s ‘double’ triumph.“After some very narrow victories at the start of the season, the team has obviously grown in experience as the year has moved on,” said the Bermuda international, whose side averaged more than three tries per game.“Player-coach John Quigley has instilled a real game-plan and structure to our game which the other teams have found hard to handle, resulting in an average of over four tries a game since Christmas.“Overall, the season has been a success with no real standout stars, but a group of players who get on well both on and off the pitch, irrespective of nationality.”Dobinson also hailed the impact of Renegades’ younger players who ably supported the team’s raft of national team veterans throughout the season.“Our success has been built on a mixture of youth and experience,” he said. “National team veterans from the back-to-back Caribbean Championship wins including Bermuda captain Peter Dunkerley, Tom Healy, Conor McGlynn, Ian Henderson and Greg Garside have been well supported by up and coming locals from the national Under-19 squad, Trae Stevens and Ndyaviah Williams.“Trae has gone from making his senior debut this year to being called up to the national team squad.”
