International to install a 16-metre satellite dish in Southside until the Board has carried out a site inspection.

TeleBermuda has submitted plans for the dish to be placed at Building 110 on Corregidor Avenue, on the former US Naval Airstation, but this has led to opposition from St. David's neighbours, as well as the Bermuda Land Development Corporation.

Residents organised a petition to stop the installation, but the DAB ruled it was sent too late to be considered.

In a letter to the Planning Department, the upstart communications firm said moving the dish to any other site would "more than triple the estimated costs of the installation'' and make the entire project "financially unfeasible''.

More than 25 St. David's Island residents opposed to the plan signed a letter sent to the Planning Department, and the Bermuda Land Development Company lent its support to the opposition.

"Should members of the community urge the relocation of the proposed dish, the BLDC would support considerations for a more acceptable location,'' stated a BLDC letter.

But the Development Application Board refusal stated the petition was received "out of time'' and pointed out that "all development regulations and details of planning on the former military bases are at the discretion of the Board''.

The DAB also found that the proposal was "suitably located in that it relates to existing structures and infrastructure and therefore is in accordance with the St. David's Special Development Zone''.

However, the application has been deferred until officials visit the site.
