The Bermuda Red Cross has launched an appeal to help the victims of an ongoing volcanic eruption in the Caribbean.

The relief will be sent to the residents of St Vincent as they continue to withstand the effects of the La Soufrière volcano.

The volcano erupted on Friday and forced 16,000 people to evacuate their homes as the island was covered in a layer of ash and rock fragments.

The eruption cut off water supply to the island, which has a population of about 110,000 people, and put about 3,000 people into emergency shelters on Friday.

Volcanologists warned that La Soufrière could remain active for several days or even weeks.

Residents of Barbados, which is about 104 miles away from St Vincent, were also warned to stay indoors.

A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Red Cross said that financial donations would assist the International Red Cross in search and rescue efforts and other forms of support.
