Three road deaths in five days
A 23-year-old woman lost her fight for life yesterday in a week which has claimed more road accident victims than any other in recent history.
The death of Kitina Simmons marks the third road fatality in just five days, in what Police say is "one of the worst weeks in recent history when it comes to serious road traffic collisions"
.Ms Simmons, of Sandys, suffered serious head injuries when her car overturned and struck a wall in the early hours of Thursday. She died at 2 p.m. yesterday in the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Police say Ms Simmons was travelling east along Middle Road when the car hit a pavement and overturned, near to the junction of Longford Road. A front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman from St. George's, suffered cuts and facial injuries in the accident at 12.45 a.m
Last night, tributes to Ms Simmons were being posted on the Internet social networking site Facebook. The page 'R.I.P Kitina' said: "Its hard to see her go and leave her friends an family behinds especially her daughter who she loved and cared for so much KITINA always had that big smile on her face and loved a good laugh".
Messages included: "You were the tiny person with a big heart" and "I will miss you. I can never forget you.T, you will live through that beautiful daughter of yours.
"The death of Ms Simmons is the seventh road fatality in just four months. Junior Transport Minister, Senator Wayne Caines, is calling an emergency meeting of the Road Safety Council this week to address the number of deaths on the Island's roads.
At the weekend, two men also died from injuries in road traffic accidents. Charles Everett, a 30-year-old lawyer at Appleby, died in the early hours of Saturday after his motorcycle hit a tree at the junction of Cedar Avenue and Laffan Street in Pembroke.
Later that day, Kelvin Lamar Quarles, 37, of Warwick, died from head injuries after falling from his motorcycle in Palmetto Road, near Barkers Hill, at 8.20 p.m. on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, two men were injured after their car hit an embankment, overturned, and collided with a jeep. The accident happened at 8 a.m. in North Shore Road near the junction with Studio Lane in Hamilton Parish. The driver, a 22-year-old from Sandys, suffered cuts to his right arm. His passenger, a 35-year-old from Hamilton Parish, received cuts to his forehead

On Wednesday evening, a 37-year-old motorcyclist from Paget suffered a ruptured spleen and facial injuries in a crash at the junction of South Road and Ardsheal Drive, Paget, at around 11 p.m.
The day before, 36-year-old David Ellis died in hospital from head injuries following a road traffic accident in Tween Walls, Sandys, five days earlier.
Police yesterday reported another serious collision which resulted in one man sustaining broken ribs, punctured lungs, a broken leg and pelvis.
The accident took place at 10.35 p.m. on Sunday in South Road, Southampton, near the junction with Horseshoe Road. Police say a motorcycle collided with the sidewalk and then veered into the path of an oncoming van. The driver, a 33-year-old Southampton man, broke his right ankle and received cuts to his hands and hips. His passenger, a 26-year-old from Paget, suffered broken ribs, a broken right leg, a fractured pelvis and punctured lungs.
A Police spokesman said: "The rider of the motorcycle was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.
" The motorcycle driver has since been discharged from hospital but his passenger is still in ICU. His condition was last night described as "stable".
This Friday marks the start of Road Safety Week, and R.O.L.O. Remembering Our Loved Ones, is to hold its first tag day. The charity was set up last year to support the families and friends of road accident victims, both by providing comfort and also practical advice.
A spokeswoman said last night: "On behalf of the R.O.L.O. organisation we express our sincerest condolences to all families who have lost loved ones tragically on Bermuda's roads this past weekend.
"We encourage the motoring public at large to slow down and to take extra precautions when travelling on Bermuda's roads."
