The Independent Senator takes over from Mr. David L. White who was elected president of the Trust last month.

President and Chief Executive Officer of American International Company Ltd., is well known for his work in the community.

Mr. White said: "The Trust is delighted that Sen. Johnson has agreed to chair this effort. His reputation in the community and his stature in the business world assure that the campaign will go forward successfully.'' The campaign, "In Trust For All'' is still a non-public silent phase to solicit advance gifts.

It has a target of $6.5 million which will be divided between programmes for historic restoration and preservation of open space.

The campaign will be publicly launched in the autumn with a series of social events in all nine parishes.

Sen. Johnson joined American International Company in 1954. He has been president and chief executive officer for the past 16 years.

He is also president and chief executive officer of International Property Catastrophe Reinsurance Company Ltd. and Starr Excess Liability Insurance Company Ltd.

Extensively involved in the community he was made a Justice of the Peace in 1987 and appointed to the Senate in 1988. He is a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of its International Companies Division.

Sen. Johnson served as a member of the Bermuda Board of Immigration from 1983-88, and a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee from 1982-88, holding the position of deputy chairman over the final two years.

A member of the Premier's negotiating team on the Bermuda/United States Tax Treaty he was also chairman of the Bermuda Insurance Admissions Committee from 1983-88.

Sen. Johnson is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Bermuda Employers' Council, a director of Bermuda Computer Services Ltd., Telco and the Bank of Bermuda Ltd. as well as an officer and director of numerous international companies incorporated in Bermuda.

Born in Bermuda in 1937, Sen. Johnson is married and has one daughter. He attended the Port Royal School and Saltus Grammar School, receiving a General Accounting Certificate from the Bermuda Commercial School.

He is an avid golfer, enjoys reading and is a member of the Mid-Ocean Club and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club and the Ocean Reef Club, which is based in Florida.
