Senate pays tribute to Dr. Charles Smith

Dr. Smith died at the age of 91 last month, and senators passed on their condolences to his family.

A friend for 20 years, Sen. Maxwell Burgess described him as one the most dedicated physicians in recent history on a doctor-patient basis.

Opposition Senate leader, Sen. Alex Scott described the death of Dr. Smith as the end of an era. He said that he not only treated illnesses but also gave good advice to his patients on other subjects concerning the community.

PLP Sen. Ira Philip said that during his long life Dr. Smith had been greatly involved in the promotion of boxing in Bermuda. He said: "Dr. Smith was dedicated to the profession and to the community at large.'' Motor mechanic Mr. George Manville Layne was also remembered by Sen. Trevor Woolridge . Mr. Layne died at the age of 70 recently, and is best remembered working at his business in Loyal Hill, Devonshire.

Sen. Philip passed on condolences to the family of Mrs. Gloria Kennedy Stevens, 66, a retired school teacher, whose funeral was held last week. He said that Mrs. Stevens never failed to smile despite suffering over the last few years of her life.

Condolences were also given to the family of Mr. Goodwin Shirley Tavares of Somerset. Sen. Philip said that his death, at the age of 69, was a loss to the community of Sandys.

A number of senators congratulated Dr. Roosevelt Brown on his 60th birthday, stating he had received goodwill messages from all over the world. Bermudians were asked to continue their support of the Bermuda national football team by the Senate.

Sen. Scott congratulated the team on their performances in the World Cup. He was joined by Minister of Sport, Sen. Pamela Gordon in calling for Islanders and visitors to turn up at the National Stadium for the final match with Canada on Sunday at 4 p.m.

He said: "The team is playing for third place, but the consensus of the people of Bermuda is that they have come in first.''
