Counselling conference ready to go

The 18th Annual conference on "Counselling and Treating People of Colour ? An International Perspective" is slated to come to Bermuda this year after being cancelled last year.

The conference was set to come to Bermuda last year but because of Hurricane Fabian the sponsors relocated to Puerto Rico.

Founder of the conference, Dr. Frances Brisbane said: "Having the conference in Bermuda this year is making a lot of people happy."

The conference will be held from December 1-5 and is expected to draw 350-500 people.

Conference attendees hail from the US, the Caribbean, Mexico, Africa, Asia, and native American lands.

There is a long list of distinguished overseas and local speakers.

The fee is $295 for locals and $395 for foreigners.

A pre-conference session will be held from November 30 to December 1 on "Dialogues to Address Health and Quality of Life Issues Among the Ageing."

It is open to anyone over 55 years old.

During the conference, there will be one session open to youth who are 13 to 17 years old and the other to college students.

Each will focus on peer leadership, cultural understanding, racial harmony, HIV/AIDS, and violence and drug prevention.

Those who wish to register can send an e-mail to Edie Lundgren at elundgrnotes.cc.sunysb.edu.

There will be four post-conference sessions from December 5-7 which will be on leadership.

One will be for leaders already in top management positions and the other for those aspiring to become leaders.

All events will be at The Fairmont Southampton Hotel.
