Premier's son's case adjourned

The trial of Premier Ewart Brown's son was adjourned yesterday following a motion filed by his defence attorneys to continue the case.

No date was scheduled yesterday, according to Jane Robinson of the LA District Attorney's office, for the continuance of the case.

Kevin Antario Brown, 37, who is a physician at his Crenshaw Expo Medical Centre, in Los Angeles, is facing 33 felony charges which include a lewd act on a 15-year-old girl and inappropriately touching an undercover Police officer.

Brown was originally arrested on July 8, this year following a year-long sting operation after an 18-year-old girl and the officer alleged assault.

He was bailed on $50,000 only to be rearrested two weeks later on July 21 after six new alleged victims came forward. When Commissioner Henry Hall learnt Brown's father was the Premier of Bermuda, he set the bail at $4 million for fear he was a flight risk.

Attempts by Brown's lawyers to have this amount lessened have been thwarted as have their attempts to have the 23 charges initially filed against their client.

Eight of the 23 charges filed in August included sexual battery by fraud and are said to have happened while the patients were unconscious.

Ten counts were for sexual exploitation by a physician. Other charges include a lewd act against a 15-year-old female patient, an alleged rape and two charges of penetration by a foreign object. Since then another four alleged victims came forward with another 10 charges.

Earlier this month Commissioner Hall also added conditions to the bail, should Brown find the funds, including having a chaperone approved by the state medical board when he treats patients.

He will have to wear an electronic monitoring device and will not be able to travel anywhere besides work and court.

Nor will be able to travel beyond the Los Angeles County line and he will have to surrender his passport. The date for his preliminary hearing has not been set, according to Jane Robinson of the LA District Attorney's office.
