Rangers skipper tells players ‘pull your weight’

@$:Dion Stovell: Unhappy with his team-mates after a poor start to the league season which has seen Southampton Rangers beaten by rivals St. David’s in consecutive weeks.

Southampton Rangers skipper Dion Stovell has called on his team-mates to step up and pull their weight after two embarrassing defeats to title contenders St. David’s already this season.Last week’s 169-run loss at Southampton Oval was followed up by an equally woeful six-wicket loss at Lords, leaving the defending champions languishing in the bottom three of the league table. While Rangers have faltered so far this term, Stovell has been playing his part, stroking 61 in the weekend’s loss and snaring wickets to keep his side in the match, continuing his fine form from the Belco Cup competition. This, however, isn’t good enough for the Bermuda international, who has urged his side to stand up and be counted before their title defence is over so early in the season.“We have played some horrible cricket in our first two matches, not to take anything away from St. David’s. They are a very good team and title contenders and are playing better then us right now,” said Stovell.“We have to play to our ability and focus on the job that each player has to do because we have batsmen not batting sensibly, bowlers not hitting their marks, so it needs to be sorted out in order for us to move forward.“It’s a bit frustrating really, we can’t afford to rely on myself and Janeiro every week to bat and bowl teams out. We have to look at each player and ask if they have what it takes because it’s a team effort that will get us back in the title race.”The side already have a trophy in their cabinet this year, the Belco Cup, but Stovell is adamant that winning the season’s curtain raiser hasn’t given the side a false sense of their ability. There are only three unbeaten teams in the Premier Division with St. David’s, fellow East Enders St. George’s, and Willow Cuts all leading the way after two weeks of play, while Rangers in the bottom three along with PHC and Young Men’s Social Club.Devonshire Rec., and Bailey’s Bay both have one win to go along with a loss.Rather than dwell on what is going on with their current form, the opening batsman wants his team-mates to focus on their next matches and look to put together a good overall performance, starting this weekend in the Twenty20 league against Warwick and Somerset. The skipper went as far as apologising to his club’s fans for their dismal performances early on and has vowed to make amends for their slow start.“Winning Belco hasn’t done anything to our concentration, we have won it seven out of nine years and in those years we have won the league a few times as well so it is a matter of us applying ourselves,” he said.“There are teams out there that are gunning for us, not only because we are the champions but because we are who we are and Rangers carry a lot of weight in local cricket, so to beat us brings joy to clubs.“Also some decisions haven’t gone our way and we need to put these things behind us, it is on our shoulders to correct the current situation.“I would like to tell our fans that I am sorry for our recent displays and that we will be bouncing back, starting this weekend in the Twenty20.“The league is still early, but we have dug ourselves a big hole to get out of.“We need a few things to go in our favour in terms of results but until we get ourselves sorted out we will always be chasing.”
