BPSU joins global public services campaign

The Bermuda Public Services Union now has the world at its fingertips after pledging its support to a global campaign. The union is hoping to benefit from strength in numbers by joining forces with public and private sector trade unions, municipal governments and civil society groups across the globe. The BPSU is also encouraging its 3,500 members to sign up to a campaign being promoted by The Council of Global Unions'.The aim of the campaign, called Quality Public Services Action Now!, is to advance the quality of public services to create societies that are “equal, prosperous and democratic.”Over time it is hoped that the BPSU's involvement will help to enhance people's quality of life by providing more security.BPSU president Kevin Grant said they were now thinking international rather than local when it comes to promoting solidarity between communities. He said: “We are committed to doing our part to bring this vision to fruition.“We realise our members and the average worker are suffering due to the current recession. As a result families are being stressed and this is leading to all sorts of social issues.“We believe investment in quality public services backed by fair taxation policies is a key solution to the economic crisis.”Mr Grant added: “We hope that acknowledging our support will set the tone for how this country should move forward.“This is of benefit to us all. We will be part of a combined effort. It will mean we will stay abreast of what's happening internationally rather than just locally.”Mr Grant publicly pledged the BPSU's support for the campaign at a press conference at BPSU headquarters on Angle Street yesterday. To find out more about the Quality Public Service Action Now! campaign visit www.qpsconference.org and add your name to the charter.
