Woman given community service for wrong-turn collision

A motorist who admitted to careless driving that caused grievous bodily harm to a teen motorcyclist has been sentenced to 200 hours’ community service.

Alicia Maynard, 57, of Angle Street Pembroke, has already been banned from driving for two years for the August 24 offence, in which she disobeyed a traffic sign at the entrance of Saltus Grammar School on St John’s Road.

Eastbound vehicles are not permitted to turn into the school’s entrance.

At an earlier appearance, Magistrates’ Court heard that Maynard made a turn into the path of 16-year-old Andre Durham, who was thrown into her car windshield and suffered broken ribs and an injured knee.

It was a first offence for Maynard, who is unemployed due to a disability.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo imposed community service following a review of her social inquiry report.
